Katarma Art

The art of contemplation

“garland made of stone and ceramic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean”

The sculptures and murals in and around the hotel reveal the harmony between human activities and the Galapagos environment. They are made with recycled ceramic, in stone that lasts a lifetime.

Katarma was created as a work of art that utilizes a mix of architecture, design, painting and sculpture techniques that are put together in a singular and harmonious way.

Artist

David Basantes Vargas

Owner, Architect & Artist

David Basantes Vargas is the creator of Katarma Hotel — a longtime Galápagos resident who envisioned and built the hotel as a living work of art. With a deep commitment to sustainability, David constructed Katarma using recycled ceramics and locally sourced materials, weaving sculpture, mosaic, and painting directly into the architecture itself. He considers the building inseparable from the art it contains: every wall, staircase, and courtyard is a canvas, and every tile and ceramic fragment tells a story of the islands. For David, architectural work and artistic expression are one and the same — a way to transmit space, peace, and the economy of life found in the Galápagos.
