Our Story
About Katarma
Where art, nature & the Galápagos become one
A Place Where Art Meets Nature
Katarma Galapagos is the Galápagos Islands' premier boutique eco-art hotel, located on the beautiful San Cristóbal Island. Conceived, designed, and built by artist and architect David Basantes Vargas, Katarma is a place where art, culture, and the extraordinary natural world of the Galápagos live in perfect harmony.
David spent years constructing Katarma by hand, using recycled ceramics, locally sourced stone, and salvaged materials — so that the building itself became a work of art before a single painting was hung. Every mosaic staircase, sculpted courtyard, and hand-tiled pool is a direct expression of his vision: that architecture and art are inseparable.
Eco-Art Hotel
Designed by David Basantes Vargas using recycled ceramics and local materials, Katarma is a living gallery where every surface tells a story and every material honours the environment.
Environmental Conservation
San Cristóbal Island is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. We are deeply committed to protecting this fragile ecosystem through responsible tourism and active conservation programs.
Cultural Exchange
We celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Ecuador and the Galápagos. Our team, our art, and our cuisine all reflect the vibrant traditions of this unique corner of the world.
The Visionary Behind Katarma
Designed by David Basantes Vargas
"The architectural work integrates to art in order to transmit more and better information."
David Basantes Vargas is the owner, architect, and artist behind every detail of Katarma. A longtime resident of the Galápagos, he is an autodidact who learned his craft by observing the natural world — its colours, textures, and rhythms — and translating those findings into form.
From the mosaic fish that swim across the staircases to the ceramic sculptures rising from the gardens, every element of Katarma bears David's hand. He built the hotel using recycled ceramics and locally sourced materials, creating a structure that is as sustainable as it is beautiful.
Our Mission
To provide an unparalleled boutique hotel experience that celebrates the intersection of art, culture, and nature — while actively contributing to the conservation of the Galápagos Islands and the well-being of the local community.
We invite you to stay with us, explore the wonders of the Galápagos, and leave with a deeper appreciation for this extraordinary place and its people.
